Folks,
please don’t post off-topic
comments in the comboxes. I will delete
them, and any responses to them, as soon as I see them, and (since I don’t always see them immediately) sometimes
that means that a long thread will develop that is destined to end up in the
ether. Remember, if your comment begins
with something like “This is off topic, but…,” then it isn’t a comment you should
be posting. And remember too, there is
always that remedy for concupiscence known as the open thread. Here’s the latest. This time, everything is on topic, from acid jazz
to Thomas Szasz, from Family Guy to Strong
AI, from the coronavirus to Miley Cyrus.

Summer open thread
It’s about
time for another open thread, so here it is.
From violent crimes to medieval times to cringe-making rhymes, nothing
is off-topic. Still, as always, please
keep it classy and keep it civil.
While I’ve
got your attention, let me take this opportunity to make several comments about
comments. First, a few readers have
complained recently that their comments are not appearing. In fact, they are appearing. What these
readers do not realize is that after a thread exceeds 200 comments, you have to
click on the “Load more…” prompt at the bottom of the comments section to see the
most recent comments. It’s easy to miss,
but it’s there. Click on it and you’ll
no doubt find that comment that you thought had disappeared into the ether (and
perhaps had needlessly re-posted several times).

New Year’s open thread
Dear reader,
let’s open up the discussion this year by letting you open it up. It’s time to
get that otherwise off-topic comment of yours that I keep deleting out of your
system at last. For in these open thread
posts, everything is on-topic, from Marshall
McLuhan to Malcom McLaren, from Duke Ellington to Beef Wellington, from Plato
to Play-Doh. Just keep things civil and
constructive, please. Previous open
threads archived
here.

Open-minded open thread
It’s time
for an open thread. So dust off those otherwise
off-topic comments you’ve been aching to post.
Because from M.C. Escher to MC Hammer, from pick-up sticks to Kubrick
flicks, from panpsychism to pan pizza, everything is now on-topic. Just keep it civil and in good taste, as
always. Previous open threads archived here.

It’s the next thrilling open thread!
Please keep
in mind, dear reader, that if you’re inclined to begin a comment with “This is
off-topic, but…” then you shouldn’t post it.
Certainly I won’t approve it. Wait
for a post where it will be on-topic – such as this one, the latest, exciting
open thread, where everything is
on-topic. From logic gates to interest
rates, from CRT to CBD, from Charlemagne to House of Pain – the field is wide
open. Just keep it civil and keep it
classy, as always.

New Year’s open thread
Let’s open
the New Year with an open thread. Now’s
the time at last to bring up that otherwise off-topic comment that keeps
getting deleted, or anything else you like.
From Art Nouveau to Art Blakey, from presidents to presentism, from
sci-fi to Wi-Fi to hi-fis, everything is on topic. Just keep it civil and classy. Previous open threads collected here.

Voila! An open thread! (Updated)
UPDATE 4/20: Lately the comments sections have been filling up quickly. Some readers seem unaware that after the count reaches 200 comments, you have to click the "Load more..." prompt that appears in small print at the bottom of the combox in order to view newer comments. That's part of Blogger's algorithm and out of my control, sorry. So, if you're worried that your comment is not showing up, never fear. It's there, but you have to click the prompt to see it.

End of semester open thread
Let’s start the summer break off right, with an open
thread. Now’s the time to get that
otherwise off-topic obsession of yours off your chest, at long last. From plunging stocks to Pet Rocks, from
buying Twitter to Gary Glitter to sharing an Uber with Martin Buber, everything
is on topic. The usual rules of good
taste and discretion apply. Previous
open threads archived

Open thread combox
Here’s the latest open thread, by popular demand. Actually, it was one guy, but I’ll bet there at least twice as many as that who are interested. From quantum logic to Quantumania, MacArthur at Inchon to Thomas Pynchon, Muay Thai to Jamiroquai, everything’s on topic. Just keep it civil and classy. Earlier open threads archived here.

At last, another open thread!
Long overdue
(sorry), it’s the latest open thread.
Talk amongst yourselves. Unlike
Linda Richman, I won’t give you a topic.
From Aquinas to Quine, Cheap Trick or fine wine, bad puns and lame
rhymes – the field is wide open. Though,
you know, maybe capital punishment is a little played at the moment…

It’s an overdue open thread
We’re long overdue for an open thread, so here it is. Now you can post that otherwise off-topic comment that I deleted three days, three weeks, or three months ago. Feel free to talk about whatever you like, from light cones to Indiana Jones, Duns Scotus to the current POTUS, Urdu to Wall of Voodoo. Just keep it civil and classy.

It's an open thread!
We’re due
for an open thread. Now is your chance
to bring up matters that would otherwise be off-topic. For example, sometimes readers want to
respond to something I said on Twitter/X (and write up such a comment under a post
here – where it doesn’t get past moderation if it’s not on topic). But feel free to bring up whatever you like. From Cantor’s continuum problem to Canter’s
Deli, from Gertrude Stein to grapefruit wine, from Jack Kirby to Kier Kirby,
everything is fair game for discussion.
Just keep it civil and classy, as always. Previous open threads archived here.

Year-end open thread
Let’s bring
this annus horribilis to an end with
an open thread. That annoyingly
off-topic comment of yours I keep deleting?
It’s now on-topic, so bring it. From
Richard Rorty to Get Shorty, from Bend Sinister to Yes Minister, from Tanqueray to Ricky Jay… nothing now stands in
your way. Apart from basic blog
etiquette, naturally. Trolls are still kindly
invited to get lost. (Previous open threads archived here.)

Open thread (and a comment on trolling)
We’re long overdue
for another open thread. Now is the time
for you to post that otherwise off-topic comment I’ve had to delete. From Being Itself to mental health, from
Mickey Spillane to John Coltrane, from Dada to Prada, in this post everything
is on-topic. Naturally, the normal rules of decency and
civility still apply.

10th anniversary open thread
While there
are still a few days left to September, I should note that this month marks the
10th anniversary of this blog.
It was initially started in part to serve as a kind of online supplement
to The
Last Superstition, which was published around the same time. Of the eleven books I’ve written, co-written,
or edited, seven of them (including TLS)
have appeared during the last ten years.
We’ll see if I can keep up the pace during the next ten years.

Open the thread!
It’s your
opportunity lawfully to indulge your impulse to make those off-topic comments I’m
constantly having to delete. Do so in
good conscience, because nothing is really off-topic in this, the latest open
thread. From Donald Fagen to Ronald
Reagan, from the Black Dahlia to papal regalia to inverted qualia – discuss whatever
you like. As always, just keep it classy
and civil and free of trolling and troll-feeding.

Opening the thread
It’s the latest
open thread. This is the time to get
your off-topic comments off your chest, and to give your threadjacking impulses
free rein. From iPhones to I, Claudius, from D-list celebs to
Eugene Debs, from the A-theory to Blossom Dearie – discuss whatever you like, within
reason. Just keep it civil, classy, and
troll-free.

Let’s open it up
If we had a
new open thread post, what would you talk about? Current events? That off-topic philosophical or theological question
you vainly keep trying to bring up in other threads?
Or perhaps one of the Postliberal Order articles of mine that you were unable
to access before, but are now out from behind the paywall? Let’s find out. From vocalese to Daniel Keyes, from temporary
intrinsics to temporary insanity, from Eisenhower to Einstein to Eisenstein – here, everything is open for discussion. Just keep it civil and classy. Previous open threads archived here.

The thread you’ve been waiting for
Let’s close
out 2024 and begin 2025 with a long overdue open thread. Now’s your chance to get that otherwise off-topic
comment posted at last. From plate
tectonics to Hooked on Phonics, from substance
abuse to substance dualism, from Thomism to Tom Tom Club, everything is on-topic.
Trolls still not welcome, though, so
keep it sane and civil.

The thread about nothing
It’s open
thread time. There is no topic, which
means everything is on topic. Now is the
time finally to raise that issue that you keep bringing up out of left field in
other threads – in comments I keep deleting while cussing you out under my
breath. From the Manhattan Project to the
Manhattan Transfer, from Brian De Palma to Pachamama, from frontal lobotomies
to Kantian autonomy – go ahead and hash it out.
As always, keep it civil, classy, and free of trolling and
troll-feeding.
