Recently I
did a long Skype interview about By
Man Shall His Blood Be Shed: A Catholic Defense of Capital Punishment
for The Patrick Coffin Show. You can watch it here. (Boy do I need to master the art of Skype – I
look like I just rolled out of bed.)
For other recent radio and television interviews about the book, follow the relevant links here and here.
Excellent: Feser on Patrick Coffin's show. Now we just need to get Feser and Jordan Peterson on the same show with Coffin.
ReplyDeleteTim, provide the topic.....
ReplyDeleteRelativism, its adherents, and its horrid consequences. Also, truth and why it's important practically and morally.
DeleteDoes God exist? What/Who is God?
DeleteI'm interested in Dr. Peterson's view of God. I suspect he might take a more psychological Jungian approach where God serves as a practical symbol of the Good, the righteous, the Truth. Whether or not God exists is probably a separate question, though I know Peterson says he's a Christian.
DeleteAlso the show could be a good platform for Feser to promote his new book on the existence of God
Deletepost modernism, philosophically what its underpinnings are and why from a psych perspective it attracts many ppl
DeleteOrthodox Christianity (Feser's position) versus nondenominational neoChristianity (Peterson's position).
DeleteInstead of having Peterson and Feser debate each other like the last comment suggested, we should show their common ground on some contemporary issue. Have them both offer their thoughts on something whether it be virtue ethics or moral relativism or political correctness. That way Peterson's following will get the right type of exposure to Feser and give Feser the credibility of sounding reasonable, relevant, and interesting before hearing things that Peterson's following have had no or little exposure to. Prep the waters so to speak.
DeleteIn pro-life dialogue (I do this for a living) we always try to establish common ground first from which we can then reasonably discuss our differences. Personal credibility is everything.
Ed: LOVE the pulpy coffin cover title. The best! btw, your cam lens may be a bit dirty or a bit old. (Or maybe you're slightly out of focus in real life -- check with your family.....ha) Content of conversation was terrific.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patrick! Yeah, I'm like that guy in the Woody Allen movie Deconstructing Harry who appeared onscreen as a blur.
DeleteBy the way, Patrick, to amend my answer to a question you asked during the interview, Joe Bessette tells me: "One small correction for future reference: I am St. Andre Bessette’s second cousin thrice removed. That is to say, I am descended from his great grandfather."
DeleteEd, great work on Patrick's show. Very clear explanations and helpful illustrations. I love the quick points for showing capital punishment and abortion are disanalogous: it's not ok to steal so it's not ok to fine people, OR it's not ok to kidnap so it's not ok to imprison people.
ReplyDeleteNow we just need him to get on The Ben Shapiro Show with The Daily Wire. Then the large conservative, youtube-watching high-school-to-college-age demographic (believe me, it exists; hence success of Milo Yiannopolus, David Crowder and Jordan Peterson) will popularize Dr. Feser and analytical Thomism will have a chance to enter the public sphere.
ReplyDeleteEd,
ReplyDeleteYou did really well. Your exchanges on this site are one of the reasons it's the best philosophy blog around and you are able to translate that to live shows which many (including myself!) would find hard to do.
Patrick Coffin,
How about a look at the liberal foundations that suuport current issues like transgenderism, abortion etc? I feel it would be right up Feser's ally considering his books TLS and Locke where he knows both the philosophical assumptions and historical contingency of the foundations for current liberalism. Peterson is obviously outspoken on TG. Also, i suspect Feser may mention the issue of essence/natures which would be worth the admission fee!
Off-topic FYI: Deacon Jim has an article at Crisis about Hiroshima here: http://www.crisismagazine.com/2017/combatants-non-combatants-double-effect
ReplyDeletearguing double-effect and Total War. I linked to your "Unconditional Surrender" post, so if you start seeing new comments on old posts, that's probably why.
Also off-topic: Remember Im Skeptical? Well, his idiocy just continues on (check the comments as well as the entry):

And I welcome whatever comments you may want to contribute, as long as they are civil.
ReplyDeleteI'm Skep and Papalinton, what an intellectual treat!
DeleteYes, it's better than Act and potency is the answer to every question you could ever ask, and you're stupid if you don't buy it.
DeleteNo, even if that was what went on here, and it isn't, it would still be better than the intellectual wasteland of your site.
DeleteThere are bacteria that have made a greater intellectual contribution than you and Papalinton. Now slink back to the foul swamp of idiocy from whence you came. And shame JB for summoning you forth.
I'm sorry for summoning them to this site. I didn't mean to. I didn't tell them about the links I posted on there (I rarely visit their site). I just wanted to share more comedy with you guys in the form of Skep's ridiculous posts.
DeleteThis little troll pastes my name all over the internet.
DeleteJB, most here are well aware of Skep's particular brand of conceited idiocy. There's absolutely no need to bother with the troll.
DeleteI know. I won't post anything about him again. For the record, though, he is the one who kept coming to the Christian CADRE and trolling.
DeleteWhat if people deliberately commit murders so that they can win the "right to die"? I bet nobody thought of that before me.
