ReplyDeleteAwesome topic, Professor Feser. Please publish the text online at least, for people abroad (like me).
ReplyDeleteI assume it's at what used to be called St Thomas Hall. One of the ugliest churches in existence, with a statue out front, apparently made of old car bumpers, which led to it's being called "St Thomas Crapper". Worse, back in my day, the priest was a parody of the progressive clergy. I think it had a lot to do with my staying Anglican as long as I did. (Believe it or not, you were more likely to get orthodox doctrine at the Episcopal church ministering to students. Not certain, but more likely.)
ReplyDeleteI did have a friend who, when he went there, made up prayers for the part where everyone was encouraged to do so; but his were for speedy victory over Godless Communism in Vietnam. This wasn't popular; he ended up going to the church in town.
BTW, I'm wondering if I can go. Love to, but not likely.
ReplyDeleteProf Feser, anything coming up in your own backyard, i.e. SoCal?
ReplyDeleteHave you had an opportunity to read God Over All?
ReplyDeleteOuch- nearby & I would love to go- but I have a prior engagement! Dang! George-LOl I always called the statue St Thomas of the car bumpers. I believe the priest to which you refer is no longer a priest. I hope there is a way to get the lectures online.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Le Sauvage:
ReplyDeleteThe ugly St. Thomas Hall you remember was replaced a generation ago by a larger, but still ugly, church. I understand they're finally getting around to replacing that building by one that actually looks like a church (to match the beautiful priory they built a few years ago). I don't know whether the car-bumper statute (still there as of September, according to Google Maps Street View) will be removed, but one can always hope.
Mm: The pastor to whom George referred left the Order of Preachers in the mid-70s and was incardinated into the Diocese of Richmond. He retired some time ago and died late last year. He needs our prayers.
Unfortunately, even the departure of the founding pastor didn't solve St. Thomas's problems. I recall a pastor, who hadn't seemed obviously heretical, who offered a three-part series during the early 80s on "Catholic Sexual Morality." The church was pretty packed for this (as you might imagine), but instead of taking the opportunity to explain why the Church's teaching actually makes sense (because it, unlike the hedonism that prevails in the culture outside the Church, actually conforms to reality), told his audience, in effect, "I have to teach the Party Line because I wear the habit, but here are 57 reasons you might want to reject the Church's teaching."
But fortunately, this is not your father's St. Thomas. Those who remember the bad old days of the 70s and 80s will hardly recognize it. Fr. Brian Mulcahy, OP (pastor during the early 2000s and a U.Va. alumnus) and his successors have done a lot to put the parish back on a sound footing.
Someone on another site suggested you might want to see my REFUTATIONS of Thomas' FIVE WAYS of proving the existence of God.

Anonymous 6am 1/24, that's good to know. In my day St Thomas Hall was also known as the "freak show".
ReplyDeleteMy Toad, your linked argument shows a complete ignorance of what St Thomas is saying. You might search this site to find why. I'll give one: Aquinas "offers no proof of the assertion that the sequence of previous motions cannot extend forever back in time" (your words) for the very simple reason that he is not making that assertion. That you so read it means you don't understand Thomism 101.
I'd be interested to see what Ed has to say about how this went. I confess I am biased; to me, Charlottesville is almost heaven. If it had waterfront, it would be very paradise.
